Three Christmas Songs for 2022

The holidays are fast approaching and I’m trying my best to get festive so I thought I’d round up some of the Christmas releases from this year and beyond in my weekly playlist. Read on to find out more about my three favourite new/old ones for this year.

Hailey Whitters – Meet Me Under the Mistletoe

Hailey’s album ‘Raised’ is one of the sweetest records of the year and she continues her hot streak by releasing two Christmas covers. She has mastered the country Christmas feeling on her cover of Randy Travis’s romantic ‘Meet Me Under the Misteltoe’ and conveys heartbreak on her George Jones’s ‘New Baby for Christmas’. With the quality of these two songs, the only disappointment is that she hasn’t released a full Christmas album. Next year?

Michaela Anne – Last Christmas

After George Michael’s untimely death there’s something too sad about hearing his version of this classic, so I was happy to hear Michaela Anne bring something new to ‘Last Christmas’. She released her brilliant album ‘Oh To Be That Free’ earlier this year, and this festive covers EP is a warm and welcoming way to end the year.

Lola Kirke – Christmas Alone (Live)

Recorded live at the Blue Room in Nashville, Lola Kirke’s new EP of songs includes the brilliant new original ‘Christmas Alone’. It’s about the complexity of a family Christmas, sung with a little tongue in cheek humorous spirit. Think the Pistol Annies meets Kacey in terms of lyrics, which is the kind of real truth I like to hear at Christmas. The festive fiddle adds a little bow to this gift of a song.
