E.P. Review: Wonder Women of Country

As individual musicians Kelly Willis, Brennen Leigh and Melissa Carper mastered the art of classic country songwriting; their vintage charms often felt transported from another era, one where talent and musicianship were celebrated. Now together they have formed a super group, called Wonder Women of Country, where their shared music sensibility and throwback style is a terrific treble threat.

The opening song ‘Fly Ya To Hawaii’ was begun by Brennen and finished by Melissa, and its catchy calypso style shows how well these women all write and perform together. The EP shares the lead vocals nicely between all three, allowing each to shine with some sweet sisterly support on harmony.

Of all three Melissa Carper has the most distinctive voice and on ‘Won’t Be Worried Long’ she takes the lead vocal on a gorgeous song celebrating the power of country music to soothe the soul. Kelly’s divorce inspired ‘A Thousand Ways’ is another stunner, featuring some always welcome accordion.

On ‘Hanging on to You’ the trio’s love of all things vintage is turned into the hook ‘they don’t make em like they used to, which is why I’m hanging on to you’ making a breezy little love song that captures the honest heart of what these women bring to country music.

They finish the release with a cover of John Prine’s ‘I Have Met My Love Today’ a live favourite which shows how well their beautiful voices harmonise together.

Kelly Willis has said of the project: “The whole thing has just been amazing and super fun. I’m loving it!” And that joy and charm is infectious for the listener too.

Another little wonder to remind you that women make the best country music.
