Album Review: Leah Blevins – All Dressed Up

Making vintage music sound both fresh and personally authentic isn’t easy to pull off but on this new album ‘All Dressed Up’ Leah Blevins has done just that. Assisted by producer Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys who has worked with Yola, Nikki Lane, Lana and Shannon Shaw in the past, ‘All Dressed Up’ is the sound of an artist stepping up in both her singing and songwriting.

The album begins with a song about how Leah got ‘All Dressed Up’ just to be let down. This sense of vulnerability immediately endears her to the listener and her distinctive vocals shine from the start. In contrast with the glamorous and cool aesthetic of the cover image these are songs of a sensitive heart.

As part of the writing sessions for the album a variety of third songwriters were invited in to work on each track including Kacey’s producer Daniel Tashian who contributes to the catchy ‘Be Careful Throwing Stones’ and lovely lament ‘Tequila Mockingbird.’

My favourite song on the album is ‘Diggin’ in the Coal’ an infectious love song filled with a sense of deep appreciation for the luck of finding that rare perfect match. The classic country influence of Patsy Cline is heard on the stunning ballad ‘Lonely’ which she recently sang a beautiful version of on the Kelly Clarkson Show.

Another influence is Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks, with ‘Leave Your Baggage at the Door’ having the most obvious echo of that ‘Dreams’ vibe. ‘Centerfold’ finishes the album with a more straightforward classic rock and roll sound, delivered with a fun, suggestive wink.

Overall ‘All Dressed Up’ is a perfect vintage collection for spring/summer – ten stylish songs by a stand out singer. Effortlessly chic.
